Politics - Imran's Tsunami Fails, Nawaz Wins

PML(N) head waves his supporters after claiming a clear victory in Pakistan's General Elections 2013.
Nawaz Sharif declared victory for his party in Pakistan’s landmark elections on Saturday, putting him on course to form the next government as prime minister for a historic third term.
The partial, unofficial results represented a remarkable comeback for a man deposed in a 1999 military coup, after nearly 60 percent of the 86 million electorate turned out to vote, defying polling day attacks that left 24 dead.
The party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, of his main political rival Imran Khan conceded defeat but vows to form Government in Khyber Pakhtunkhuwah where his party is in majority.
The historic polls mark the first time an elected civilian administration completed a full term and handed power to another through the ballot box in a country where there have been three military coups and four military rulers.
Toppled in a 1999 coup, jailed and exiled, Nawaz Sharif has made a triumphant election comeback with a huge victory over his opponents. Nawaz Sharif, aged 63, a wealthy steel magnate from the pivotal Punjab province, held off a challenge from former cricket star Imran Khan who had hoped to break decades of dominance by Sharif's Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) and the Pakistan People's Party (PPP), led by the Bhutto family.
The results came unexpected to many in the nation. People knew that Nawaz Sharif's PML(N) would win but no-one expected that high margin.

National Assembly

Till now, television channels said results so far showed that the PML-N had captured 126 seats of the 272 National Assembly seats that were contested. Based on trends, it was likely to get around 130, and should easily be able to make up the required majority of 137 with support from independents and small parties. The PTI has secured 28 seats while the PPP won 30. Altaf Hussain's Karachi-Hyderabad based MQM has up-till now won 17 seats. The elections, held on Saturday, were marred by a campaign by Islamic fundamentalists to block the voting.

 Punjab Assembly

Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) has also appeared as front runners in Punjab securing 208 of the 297 seats. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf came 2nd with 20 seats while 41 seats were won by Independent candidates. PPP has completely vanished from the Punjab scene, winning only 6 seats while its alliance-party PML(Q) won 8.
PML(N) will easily form government without an alliance.

Sindh Assembly

Despite facing defeat in the other provinces PPP has somehow gathered a handful of seats from Sindh, appearing as the largest party with 69 out of 130 seats. MQM, as expected, won 31 seats becoming the 2nd largest party in the province. Much was expected from PMLN's 10-party alliance but it failed, winning just a single seat. PTI didn't even managed to win a single seat from Sindh.
PPPP and MQM together will form government in this province.

KPK Assembly

KPK is the most-discussed province now in Pakistan because of PTI's remarkable victory in this province and ANP's amazingly poor show. PTI has won 34 seats appearing the new face of KPK now. ANP, the ruling party in 2008-13, won only 3 seats which amazed many people and think-tanks of Pakistan. Moulana Fazlur Rehman's JUI(F) won 13 while PML(N) won 14 seats. Jammat-e-Islami has won 7 of the 99 seats in the province.
PTI is thought to make government in this province after making an alliance with JI and independents.

Balouchistan Assembly

The situation in Balouchistan is much more complicated. PKMAP has won 10 seats till now and is leading while Nawaz's PML(N) is just a little behind with 8 seats. JUI(F) has won 6 seats.
It is appearing that PML(N) would form government making an alliance with PKMAP.

Sad Incidents

In Pakistan's financial hub Karachi, voting was marred by allegations of rigging from rival parties, and the election commission ordered a re-vote in constituency NA-250 over accusations of ballot stuffing.

Islamist party Jamaat-e-Islami boycotted polls in Karachi after accusing the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), which controls the city, of fraud and violence. The MQM denied the allegations.
