FIFA World Cup 2014 - Team Standings and Stats


FIFA World Cup - 20th edition of the tournament is just about to complete. Germany will battle Argentina in the Final while Brazil vs Netherlands will decide the 3rd place. All the action, drama and entertainment will then stop for four years.

About the Table:
The teams are first tabled on the basis of their performance in the different stages of the World Cup. The teams who failed to qualify for the knock-out round are placed from 17-32. Similarly the teams knocked-out in the second round are ranked 9-16. The teams eliminated in the quarter-finals are ranked 5-8. Winner to fourth place is decided through official FIFA matches.
Also, teams are ranked on the basis of points earned. The higher the points, the higher the rank. Two teams having same points are then ranked on the basis of Goal-Difference. The more positive goal-difference, the higher the rank. For teams having same goal-difference, the team with more goals scored is ranked higher.

Facts and Stats:
  • 26th Position is the worst ever position for England in the FIFA World Cups. Previous: 13th Position in 2010.
  • This was the first time Algeria qualified for the Knock-Out stage of the World Cup. In previous three attempts, they were out in the first round.
  • Bosnia and Herzegovina was playing its first ever FIFA World Cup. 
  •  Cameroon got the Last (32nd) position. Last time in South Africa, they managed the 31st position. There last World Cup win was in 2002.
  • This was only the 3rd WC appearance for Honduras and they are yet to manage a single win in their 9 World Cup matches.
  • Netherlands are 3 times Runner-Ups and 2 times Out in the Semi-Finals in 10 WC appearances.What a challenging as well as unfortunate team they are!
  • Australia, despite their 4th WC appearance, didn't managed to win any of their matches. 30th position is their worst ever in FIFA World Cup.
  • Japan finished at 29, two positions better than their worst WC performance.
  • Iran with 4 WC appearances is yet to go beyond Group stage and has managed only 1 win in 12 WC games.
  • Ghana could not play up to their standards and was eliminated in the first Round. They have qualified to Quarter-Finals and Pre-Quarter Finals in their two WC appearances.
  • 5 times AFC Asian Cup finalists Korea Republic managed 27th position. Despite playing EIGHT consecutive World Cup Korea has only managed to go past the first round on two occasions.
  • Defending Champion Spain was shockingly out in the first round and managed only 23rd position. Luckily it is not the worst performance by a defending champion. Uruguay (Champions in 1930) failed to qualify in 1934 and France (Champions in 1998) finished at 28th position in 2002.
  • Russia finished at 24th position which is their worst ever finish in 10 appearances.
  • 4 times World Champion Italy were knocked-out in the first round for second consecutive time and 7th time overall but they did managed a better position than 26th in 2010.
  • 1998 Semi-Finalist Croatia finished at 19 - their second best finish in World Cups.
  • Interestingly, Ivory Coast has managed a win each in their 3 WC appearances. 21st is the worst position they have finished at in a World Cup.
  • Portugal with two semi-final finishes in 1966 and 2006 were out in the first round for second consecutive time.
  • Greece who won a record 9 matches (out of 12) and lost only one during qualification period carried on the good form and qualified to the Round of 16 for the first time in history.
  • Nigeria qualified for the Round of 16 in 5 attempts but failed to advance further every time.
  •  No one can be unluckier than Mexico. They reached the Round of 16 for the sixth consecutive time in 2014 and like every time they were knocked-out in the Round of 16.
  •  Belgium won 4 out of their 5 matches this world cup - most they have ever won in a single world cup but they crashed out in the quarter-finals vs Argentina.
  •  Costa Rica was the surprise Quarter-Finalists this year and they were very very near to a Semi-Final spot. However 8th position is their best position in the World Cups.
  •  Colombia was another surprise in the Final 8 teams of this World Cup. They played 5 games and just lost the Quarter-Final. 5th position is its best in the FIFA World Cup.
  •  France reached the knock-out stage for the seventh time in 14 attempts but has only reached the semis 5 times.
  • Two times world champion Uruguay were knocked out in the Round of 16 for the 4th time.
  •  Switzerland was eliminated from the Round of 16 for the 3rd time in previous four attempts but they managed 11th position in 32 participants.
  •  Russia qualified for the Knock-Out round 5 times in 7 tries as Soviet Union but since becoming Russia they have failed to go beyond the group stage despite 3 attempts.
  • Chile has failed to qualify for quarter-finals third consecutive time despite qualifying for the Round of 16 in World Cup finals.
